Trying New Things … Like VCU Sushi

Grant Heston, vice president for enterprise marketing and communications at Virginia Commonwealth University, tries the VCU sushi roll.

Confession: I don’t like sushi.

Not “I’m not sure about it” -- if you know me, you know I am firmly a land-bsed protein person.

But last week I did something I almost never do: I ordered sushi. And not just any sushi; I ordered the VCU Roll.

Did I like it? Shockingly … yes.

Does this mean I now like sushi? Let’s not get carried away.

But it reminded me that trying something new is part of our job. If we want our teams to take smart risks, we have to be willing to take a bite, too.

To grow, we sometime have to say yes to the unfamiliar or unexpected … even when it comes wrapped in soy paper.

Go Rams!
